Celebrations in New York
I’m in New York, and I’ve decided to stay a bit longer than planned, as I will be leading a Nia White Belt Training in New Jersey with Caroline Kohles later this week. In the mean time, I’ve been celebrating life with my husband Jeff, his daughter and his daughter’s boyfriend who recently experienced a heart attack (and he’s a med student)! That’ll stress you...

Honolulu Reflections
I often share how blessed I feel to be living a life fulfilled, doing what I love—teaching and sharing Nia. Sometimes I am given the gift of receiving the bounty of my creativity and passion in a unique way. Last night was one of those nights. I was asked to participate in Renee Tillotsen’s Still and Moving Center’s one-year birthday celebration in Hawaii. Renee’s dream, an...

Maya 2012. Transformation at the Source!
I am excited to invite you to join me for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: “Maya 2012: Transformation at the Source” — an international conference and global gathering at Chichen-Itza on December 13-22, 2012. When I was invited to be one of the presenters with Power Place Tours, I jumped at the opportunity. They are the best when it comes to group tours to sacred sites. With so...

If Today Was My Last Day
I went to bed last night thinking about what I would do if this was the last day of my life. I was quite entertained at what came out, in this order: Be in the snow… lot’s of it. (I am.) Wake up, lay in bed and pray watching the snow fall. (I did.) Have a coffee with chocolate. (I did.) Think of all the people I love and am grateful for. (I did.) Have apple pie, cherry pie and...

A Snowy Celebration
I love surprises and I love snow. And last night, I got both! Jeff surprised me by taking me to a restaurant where a table full of my girlfriends were waiting for me to celebrate my 61st birthday. It was wonderful and unreal.  As we left the restaurant around midnight, it was like entering a winter wonderland. Pure bliss. Snow makes my heart melt and open like nothing else, except for dogs!...

A Sensuous Reality
Today I pulled out the book, “The Spell of the Sensuous” by David Abram. In it he says: Humans are tuned for relationship. The eyes, the skin, the tongue, ears, and nostrils—all are gates where our body receives the nourishment of otherness. This landscape of shadowed voices, these feathered bodies and antlers and tumbling streams—these breathing shapes out family, the beings with whom we...

Researching Pleasure & The Juice Cleanse
It’s January. I love it and I hate it. In one month I let go of things that no longer serve me, and with great enthusiasm, I commit to taking on new challenges – to be better, do better and to heal. I am a sensation scientist, and I am dedicated to researching sensation. This year I’ve decided to take on the challenge to research a whole new kind of pleasure by paying attention to the...

The Woman's Tribe
I love syncronisity. Here I am working on my “Awakening the New Feminine Spirit” book and workshop for 2012, and I come across two posts from two of my favorite women, Mama Gena and Lissa Rankin. I got so excited I wanted to share it with all my girl friends. Watch and enjoy the magic of women sharing their knowledge, inspiring the world, coming together, hanging out, and growing and...

Pondering In Beginner's Mind
I’m always humbled by the power of this work. It’s one thing to create something; it’s another to practice it. This week, I have the opportunity to learn from Nia Trainer Ken Gilbert. It’s not that I haven’t learned from Ken before, it’s just that this week, I’ve allowed myself to slip into beginner’s mind.  I’m hearing, seeing and sensing Nia...

Awakening the New Feminine Spirit in Jerusalem
I am sitting on the balcony of our hotel, listening to the sound of the waterfall from below and an Arab celebration over the fence. An Arab bride is getting her pictures taken. It’s very dream-like.  The first day in Israel, we rested. Our long flight was made easier by the fact that I had just spent two days in New York at the Omega Institute giving a workshop. Jeff is, as always,...

Touch and Skin
This month’ focus for the current Nia Continuing Education Program (Becoming A Sensation Scientist) is touch – something that is inherently linked to skin. Skin is a part of the body most of us take for granted until it starts to sag or wrinkle. It’s something most of us drag around, cover up, and rarely touch with love; we usually leave that up to someone else. The largest organ in...

Today is day thee of my second experience with the amazing Gil Hedley. He is an anatomist extraordinaire. I’m so impressed at how he addresses the body and teaches others to research it. I come away from each day knowing more intimately the gift I have: my own body. Somehow, I feel at home in this experience. I’m not sure why, but I do know that to donate your body to science – for people...

A Yoga Retreat on Vancouver Island
I love my sister, Jenni, and my brother-in-law, Paul. They move me. Actually, they move a whole lot of people; they are amazing yoga teachers – and the co-owners of NamaStay Retreat near Santa Cruz, California. I take total credit for the fact that they found the light in yoga. They met at my house when they both came to take the Nia Brown Belt! Over the years, I’ve been witness to their...

Reflections on the Toronto FAB Training
The Nia FAB Choreography & 52 Moves Training was created to bring all belts under the same roof, hence the term FAB (which stands for For All Belts). The first Nia FAB was in Portland, OR with more than 100 Nia teachers coming together. I’ll never forget it.  Last week, on my way to Toronto, after almost 30 years of having Carlos as my creative partner, I couldn’t imagine feeling what...

To follow up on my previous post from February about the Women’s International Summit for Health (WISH), I wanted to share some of the feedback that listeners sent in. Weight Gain, A Family Doctor, and Cleanse Organic
I’ve always been lucky with my weight – much thanks, I’m sure, to Nia. But over the last three weeks I’ve gained the dreaded “menopause 12 pounds.” I was so concerned that I went to the doctor (allopathic) and had a bunch of tests to make sure nothing is wrong. In some way I am hoping there is a magic explanation. I don’t want to hear, “there’s nothing wrong with you...

Coaching, Love and Human Potential
I’ve had the joy of working with many personal coaches in my 30-year career. Each has allowed me to discover my personal areas of strengths and weaknesses, and has given me a new perspective and influenced who I am today. I’ve learned that working with a coach requires understanding your position, which entails sharing but also shutting up and listening. The coach knows things you do...

Turning 60!
Just last Friday night, I found myself surrounded by a group of vibrant, empowered and loving people – people who have been like family for many, many years – as I celebrated my 60th birthday. It seems in alignment that this day would occur on the same week that the NGTs were in town for the second part of their training program with me in Portland. I felt like the luckiest woman in the world to...

Exploring MELT with Sue Hitzmann
I first met Sue Hitzmann, the creator of MELT, in 2009 at the IDEA World Fitness Convention. Her breakthrough technique keeps our connective tissue and nervous system in top condition, and slows down the aging process by rejuvenating tissue hydration and relieving the tension of day-to-day life that gets trapped in our bodies. She developed MELT to simulate the techniques, benefits, and results of...
