Setting the Tone

The human body is designed to feel safe, respected, dignified, and a sense
of belonging. In Nia, this is The Body’s Way. Every person arrives here from
a unique past and a unique way of life. People arrive with diverse movement experience, no movement experience, some have Nia experience, and others do not. Everyone is welcome! Setting the tone is a special way to say we honor each and every one of you, what you bring, and what you desire!

Safety

Safety is a fundamental human need. A sense of safety is unique to each person. Safety can be sourced from other people, communities, places, a position in a room, what you wear, or when, and if, you choose to speak. Support each other by creating a safe container for everyone to learn as their authentic self. To protect everyone’s privacy, what happens in the training stays in the training.

Dignity

Every person exists once in all of time! Every person has inestimable value. We honor and respect each person’s lived experience and celebrate the uniqueness they bring to the world. Every person deserves the space to be honored, respected, and treated with dignity. Nurturing self-dignity begins with knowing that we are each worthy.

Belonging

Developing a relationship with your body can take time. Based on lived experiences, it can take time and practice to become aware of body sensations, feelings, thoughts, desires, and needs. Whatever your path, you are welcome here and you belong here. As a community, it is our shared responsibility to create an environment where everybody is included.

Nia Is…

Experience

The Nia barefoot movement fusion class is a 60-minute holistic fitness experience. Holistic means it integrates the four parts of being human: body-mind-emotion- spirit. Holistic fitness in Nia means the ability to be resilient and adapt to life circumstances in ways that are meaningful and suitable for your body. This includes physical conditioning and self-healing through movement. The Nia class experience has evolved over 40 years to meet the needs of diverse populations and provide the world’s best somatic movement education.

Practice

Nia education embraces a holistic and integrated view of the body. Nia
practice culminates in conscious embodiment, or mindfulness, functional systemic movement skill, as well as, objective and subjective knowledge of the body, which is body wisdom.

Lifestyle

The essence of a Nia lifestyle is meaning and purpose. The culminating skill of the Art of Sensation is mastering body wisdom, which is learning how to listen to sensation and make personally appropriate well-being choices. Every human being has a unique life path. Nia supports and honors each person’s life journey living in a body.

Education

Nia, Art of Sensation explores 13 body-centered principles. These principles develop body wisdom, movement skills, and holistic self-knowledge, which is embodied consciousness. Experiential learning through movement develops felt sense awareness and body literacy.

Awareness is like a muscle that takes time to develop. In tandem with other principles, body-centered awareness is the mastery pathway for conscious transformation and artistic actualization. Transformation is broadly regarded as creative change. Body centered self actualization is the artistic realization of your potential moment to moment.

Art of Sensation culminates in a holistic body wisdom practice rooted in The Body’s Way Philosophy and Principles. The focus of body wisdom is finding joy and meaning by making purposeful choices for holistic fitness, health, and well-being.

As you begin this personal journey, I encourage you to remember that the most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with your body. The most precious thing you will ever own is your body. The wisest teacher you will ever have is your body. The best guide you will ever have is the voice of your body.
