Choose Love

So why, as the saying goes, do human beings look for love in all the wrong places?  Why do culture and society generally teach us to look for love outside of ourselves, never telling us that the love we all seek is right there, inside us?  Why do we look for someone else to fill the hole we feel in our body, mind, and heart?  Why do we seek things that make us feel loved and lovable?  Why do we make lists describing what we want love to look like and be like? Why, with every wish of falling in love, does the fear we may not find it, lurk around us?

As I pondered O-sensei’s words and felt sensation in my body when practicing Aikido, I believed I was inspired to guide people to return to the family of human beings through Nia, as well as to the family of their own human body; its parts and its systems.

I was deeply inspired by O-sensei Morihei Ueshiba, the Japanese martial artist and founder of the martial art aikido, when I was creating Nia as a movement art.  O-sensei created Aikido as a path to universal harmony and world peace.  He said, “Aikido is not an art to fight with or defeat an enemy.  It is a way in which to harmonize all people into one family. The essence of Aikido is to put oneself in tune with the functioning of the universe to become one with the universe. Those who have grasped the inner meaning of Aikido possess the universe within themselves.”

Educating people about love is how I give people knowledge and skills to love their body, love their life, and love the process of transformation. I take this leadership responsibility very seriously. It is why I believe that love is a primary tool for the prevention of loneliness, violence, and illness.

The non-violent martial art approach is something I believe in. I use it as an adviser for the way to live in my body and my life in healthy, well, and meaningful ways. I use it to establish a meeting point between love and fear and to demolish what seems to be a conflict between love and fear. I also use it as a way to bridge love and fear and to help people reconnect to self love and to the healing energy that comes from choosing love. I use it to create an internal environment for a sustainable peace that resides in my body, mind, heart, and spirit.

Never needing someone else to fill a hole within us means to fill ourselves by continually welcoming, nurturing, and embracing our spiritual essence toward living in a body. This is how anyone might reclaim living a life of Whole Being for themselves.

We human beings have amazing potential for energy, light, and love. Not knowing and understanding this, many people must be taught to recognize, acknowledge, and choose to make love a choice and a priority in their lives for themselves.  Love as medicine and education is something we should have been taught from the moment we opened our eyes. It is our most powerful health and wellness tool for falling in love with ourselves and then others.

What if we were all told, “You have been born out of universal love. You are energy, love, and light. You, are to share your love and to use your love in everything you do to bring the unique gifts you have into the world.” This truth is something we can feel and sense, because inside us lives the greatest power. That power is love.
