When I first developed Nia classes using nine specific movement forms from three key disciplines through seven cycles of movement with music in one hour of pleasure and joy, students began to comment that this new barefoot experience seemed to give them something much more than just exercise or fitness or wellness. It was magical.
“I feel so good…, that was so fun…, I feel more flexible…, I’ve never felt stronger in my life…”
These were frequent comments I heard at the end of each hour. One student told me, “For the first time, I feel at home in my body”. Their words struck me like a lightning bolt. Nia was changing more than their body. Taking Nia classes was a life changing experience that went way beyond a workout. Nia dramatically altered their sense of well-being, fitness, and health.
The Nia Technique is a Body + Life arts and science movement practice created from the design, function, and wisdom of the human body.
I had an immediate intuitive understanding that the feeling of being at home in the body is what people seek and need to seek to feel good in their body and in their life. Now, after over 40+ years, I fully comprehend this student’s body wisdom insight. And this is this key revelation that gives meaning and purpose to my ongoing Body + Life education programs.
But, it wasn’t enough that I had an intuitive understanding, I wanted to know the science of what was happening. This was probably the real origin of Nia and this inquiry set me on a quest of lifelong research and study to scientifically, philosophically, and metaphysically understand the body. Everything I learned, I used to develop Nia education and curriculum.
New students have no idea The Nia Technique is consciously designed to explore the body, mind, emotions, and spirit for authenticity.
Eventually, I understood that being at home in one’s body is the single most important need that Nia meets. It is a sense of wellness that provides comfort, security, purpose, and meaning. This is what it means to live within and to explore one’s authenticity. It is a daily practice of mindful sensory awareness and Nia makes it possible to explore that practice.
Most people first experience Nia on a safe indoor or outdoor surface. With their shoes off, most people have no idea that the self nurturing and self-healing benefits of Nia take place in only one hour. While they sense something is different, most don’t register the conscious thought, “I’m experiencing living within and holistically exploring my unique authenticity…”
Motivated by the magic of sound resonance toward conscious movement, a student’s authenticity animates all aspects of Whole Being in Body + Life.
The Nia teacher’s enthusiastic guidance reminds their students to look, listen, and to feel the sensations in their body. Students move and feel authentically unique, from within. Self awareness stimulates transformational change. Without even knowing it’s happening, students are suddenly at home in their individual whole being; body, mind, emotion, and spirit.
Somatic whole being education poetically guides students toward transformational change, all while experiencing music + movement + magic through one hour in their bare feet! As Nia students discover new ways of movement within their whole being, living within, and exploring authenticity, they discover a Body + Life transformation for meaning and purpose.
