Alla Scoperta di Nia In Italia: “Discovering Nia In Italy,” From Debbie Rosas.

FRIDAY – JANUARY 24, 2025 – WEEKEND

Movement Is a Friend of the Mind,

by Marina Santin.

The joy of movement. And that which allows you to discover Nia, a discipline that trains body, mind and emotions. “Nia – explains Rosalba Rondinelli, a pediatrician who chose to dedicate herself to teaching this practice thanks also to meeting the only Italian trainer, Letizia Accinelli – is the acronym for Neomuscolar Integrativ Action (Neuromuscular Integrated Action) and is a low-impact aerobic discipline suitable for everyone, at all ages.”

Anyone who thinks it is the latest fitness trend is wrong. “Nia was born in the 80s in America from an idea by Debbie and Carlos Rosas – she is the queen of aerobics, he is a tennis player – who, aware of the negative impact of repeated movements on the joints, decided to create a technique that respects the anatomy of the body, but at the same time trains.”

And to do so they drew from different disciplines. “Nia – Rondinelli emphasizes – combines movements inspired by dance (Modern, Jazz and Duncan), martial arts (Tai chi, Aikido and Tae Kwon Do) and body techniques (Yoga, Feldenkreis and Alexander Technique), synthesized in 52 codified movements that involve the whole body, performed in a lesson lasting about an hour with the accompaniment of music, a fundamental element that allows you to modulate the movement based on the emotions it can evoke.

Furthermore, there is a total absence of judgement, there is no right or wrong, everyone adapts the movement to themselves.” The benefits are physical and mental.
“Nia invites you to be aware of the movement and to detach your mind to concentrate on yourself and what you are doing, improving concentration and cognitive function.

It is also beneficial for cardiovascular health and the immune system, mobilizes joints, strengthens muscle tone and optimizes neuromuscular coordination, acting on mobility, stability, flexibility, agility and strength. Last but not least, it invites calm, relieves stress, anxiety and depression, helps to put energy back into circulation and promotes acceptance of one’s body”, specifies the expert.

Rondinelli continues: “Practicing Nia does not involve moving to have an aesthetically perfect physique, but to feel good about one’s body, keeping it agile. This also allows older people to maintain their skills, such as a brisk pace or bending without difficulty, improving their quality of life”.

Precisely because it promotes self-acceptance, “Nia, abroad, is included in rehabilitation centers for eating disorders, and has proven effective in degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, in multiple sclerosis and in oncological rehabilitation for breast cancer,” concludes Rondinelli.
