Embracing Moments of Uncertainty for Growth,

With Debbie Rosas.

On our journey of awakening we dance with the unknown, honoring it as the fertile ground for our greatest growth. Yet within this very turbulence lies awakening. The feminine spirit, in its new emergence, does not shrink from uncertainty — it welcomes it as a vital force of transformation. The feminine spirit is not afraid to question, to sit in the discomfort of not knowing, and to allow the unfolding of wisdom through experience.

Growing up with learning disabilities, I was very often taught that confidence and certainty were preferred behaviors over uncertainty. Yet even today, I see how part of the learning process will always include uncertainty as a catalyst for “getting it,” while arriving at personal understanding — a process of embodied knowledge and skill development that continues to deepen through practice over any lifetime.

Nia education and instruction embraces the knowledge and skills of each learner. It provides everyone with a map, a language, and a philosophy that supports them through moments of uncertainty. This is especially true when learning something as deep as Nia’s body and life knowledge, sensation science, anatomy, movement, music, and philosophy education. In Nia classes, we do not avoid uncertainty; rather, we use it to awaken.

Through practice, we learn what works for us to establish physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual harmony and peace. I have learned to welcome and expect uncertainty as part of any awakening process. The sensation of uncertainty is a new beginning, a new state of learning, and something novel and fascinating that can lead to deep body, mind, emotion, and spirit awakening for a new level of comprehension.

Think of uncertainty as a sensory surprise, a powerful emotional intelligence technology, where new information arrives and meets your present level of knowledge and skills, momentarily disrupting the status quo. Emotionally, any new information can either be perceived as a conflict that frightens us or as an opportunity to develop wisdom, choice-making skills, and deeper multidimensional comprehension.

I choose to use moments of uncertainty as fuel for my growth and transformation. I embrace uncertainty as an intelligent guide that pushes me into a dynamic conversation with my body, mind, emotions, and spirit. I measure new learning by sensing my open-minded engagement with the unknown, and by physically experiencing uncertainty as a form of welcomed stillness — an essential aspect of awakening.

In Nia, we understand that uncertainty is deeply personal — what feels overwhelming to one person may be invigorating to another. And, through hourly instruction; awakening our whole being will always acknowledge the unique pathway of each individual learning process, recognizing that some desire more time for deeper comprehension, while others require more time for deeper emotional, physical, or spiritual integration.

By giving myself permission to use uncertainty as a catalyst for awakening, I have discovered new ways of being, moving, sensing, and understanding life. For someone who once viewed my learning disability as a limitation, I now recognize them as a gift — an invitation to interact with knowledge in a uniquely embodied way. This is the wisdom of a way of being that does not fear the unknown but welcomes it.

I feel especially proud that Nia students, teachers, and faculty have been taught the collective value of co-creating in welcoming and safe learning spaces, where all bodies, all ages, and all abilities can move, explore, and embrace uncertainty with joy — knowing that through practice, in their own time and way, everyone can awaken to the wisdom and skills they seek for the fullness of body and life.
