Awakening Your Body’s Wisdom Through Tai Chi,
With Debbie Rosas
Over the years, my journey with movement has been a deep exploration of energy, sensation, and presence. I discovered that every movement form has its own unique language—an energy signature that speaks through the body.
Tai Chi has guided me to move with grace, patience, and a deep connection to the Earth. It taught me that power isn’t about force, but about flow—about surrendering to the natural rhythms of energy within and around me.
Be patient. Be present. Be in relationship with your body and the energy throughout. By embracing Tai Chi, you awaken a new level of body wisdom—one that teaches you to listen, sense, and move with life’s rhythms in a way that nourishes your whole being.
The first time I truly felt Tai Chi, I experienced my body as an extension of the wind. It was in this moment that I realized movement wasn’t just physical—it was a way of being, a state of mind, a spiritual connection. Now, I invite you to step into this experience and awaken your own body wisdom through Tai Chi.
Tai Chi is often referred to as a “moving meditation”—a dance between energy and intention, breath and motion. It embodies the qualities of softness and relaxation; grounding and connection; fluidity and balance; dynamic ease and graceful power. This is the essence of Tai Chi we use in every hour of Nia.
Each time you begin movement—whether in Classic Nia, Athletic Nia, or your own chosen movement practice—you have the opportunity to embody the principles of Tai Chi. Allow yourself to feel sensations of moving as one unified whole, where every shift of weight and breath guides your flow.
Nia teachers invite you to move as a tender being – soft yet strong, receptive yet aware. To let go of rigidity, and invite a sense of fluidity into each movement. To sense the energy exchange between your feet, eyes, breath, and hands. And, to create beauty as you let movement be an expression of grace, inside and out.
To deepen your practice, visualize and embody these natural elements:
- Move like the wind, allowing your spine to flow freely.
- Be rooted like a tree, deeply connected through your feet into the Earth.
- Sense fluid energy flowing through your limbs, like water in a stream.
- Move like a balloon, feeling your belly expand with nourishing chi.
- Embrace the gentle resilience of a willow tree, bending without breaking.
- Become one with the ocean, sensing the ebb and flow of all life.
When practicing Tai Chi, cultivate awareness with these affirmations:
- I maintain soft vertical alignment, keeping my body perpendicular to the ground.
- I breathe continuously, like water and wind.
- I eliminate unnecessary tension by sensing grace in each movement.
- I maintain a low center of gravity, keeping my joints soft and open to chi flow.
- I balance my body’s energy, creating harmony between left and right, top and bottom.
- I stay energetically alert by focusing on my physical sensations.
- I honor dynamic ease, avoiding tension and allowing energy to move freely.
- I cultivate power by surrendering, melting into my feet, and aligning my core.
- I use my whole body as a connected unit, moving with systemic awareness.
I invite you to step into the slow movement of Tai Chi. The next time you move, whether in Nia classes or in daily life, notice how you shift your weight, how your breath supports your motion, how the world around you mirrors your internal flow.
