The Fine Art of NiaSounds Music,
With Debbie Rosas.
There’s that moment—just before the music begins—where silence holds its breath. The body waits, not with tension, but with invitation. And then… a sound. A vibration. A rhythm. Not from a speaker, but from a deeper place. From memory. From mystery. This is the space where NiaSounds was born. More than a music playlist, NiaSounds is a magical portal.
It is a bridge between movement and meaning; science and soul; body and sound. It is both a Movement Music Library and a Healing Soundscape Collection shared in Nia Classes and on NiaOnDemand streaming service. One side pulses with rhythm, beat, and liberation. The other side whispers, harmonizes, and heals. Together, they form a living, breathing landscape.
NiaSounds are designed not just to move you, but to transform you. In most fitness classes, music is a repetitive background filler. It is a beat per minute prop. And, to the nervous system, it is very often an overused sound. With NiaSounds, music is the field. It is the vibration we enter and the current we ride. We don’t move to music—we move with music.
While using NiaSounds in Nia Classes, we don’t listen just with our ears—we listen with our bones, our breath, our fascia, our chakras and our energy field which is a part of all that surrounds us. What is most unique about NiaSounds is that it compels us to sound our whole being; spirit, soul, and body, as our inner voice plays with the songs to which we move.
In Nia we transform. We don’t strive for perfection. We embody sensation. Our audience is within our cellular intelligence, our listening hearts, our vibrating spirits. Our movement becomes calligraphy, written in real time with breath and beat. Our ovation is the rise of goosebumps, the exhale of truth, the moment of remembering; I am alive and I am home.
From the beginning, NiaSounds was never ordinary. We didn’t intend to make chart-toppers or easy tempos. We searched for frequency, for felt resonance, for the kind of sound that moves beneath the skin. Our music needed to stir energy, not just shake hips. It had to awaken something ancient and sacred. And so, in 1985, we recorded our first video.
With electronic musicians in San Francisco, it was evident to us that what we created at the time—it wasn’t simply fitness music—it was alchemy. That work won a “Best Video,” award from People Magazine, but more importantly, it awakened a generation of movers to sacred inner truths. Sound is a healer. A teacher. A guide. Years later, Jeff “Stuart” Stewart joined us.
Not just my partner in life, Stuart—a musician and visionary—transitioned us to full licensing, building NiaSounds on legal, ethical, and sustainable ground. Stuart’s precision and integrity helped transform our library into something lasting. And, when streaming revolutionized the world, we evolved again, re-curating, re-storing, and re-inventing, “The Nia Sound.”
NiaSounds became a living overture for awakening physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual consciousness. Today, we compose playlists like symphonies. Each one is layered with keys, frequencies, tones, and intentional chakra stimulation. We don’t just ask how a song sounds. We ask: Where does this live in the body? What does it open? What memory does it release?
We listen not only with our physical ears—but also with what I call our “chakra ears.” With our energy field and the unique architecture of our being. A well-sequenced NiaSounds playlist rises and falls with wisdom. It knows when to rest, when to rise, when to ripple. It doesn’t overtax—it tunes. It doesn’t demand—it invites. It doesn’t fill space—it creates it.
Every NiaSounds playlist we create begins in silence. In that liminal, fertile pause, we listen with our whole being. This has never been a task. It is a sacred art. Long before a song makes it into a NiaSounds playlist, we listen for tone, for texture, for what we call “resonant permission.” Every song must harmonize effortlessly with the readiness of our whole being.
We choose music the way a medicine woman selects herbs. Each song has a purpose. Some songs open the heart, others anchor the root. Some activate the voice, while others swirl into the crown and whisper to the Cosmos. And it’s never just about the sound—it’s about the silence between the sounds. The pauses. The breath. It must coax sensation, not command it.
When curating a NiaSounds playlist for the Nia class experience, we imagine the human body as a symphony of seven chakras, layered with seven ethereal fields. The goal isn’t just stimulation—it’s integration. No one frequency should dominate or fatigue. We balance masculine and feminine tones; fast and slow rhythms; as well as low and high ranges.
We layer in rhythm to awaken muscle memory and rest to restore neural circuitry. This is how we condition the whole human being—not just the whole physical body, but the whole subtle body; the whole sensing body; the whole emotional body; the whole thinking and imagining body; in addition to the whole archetypal body. In this, each playlist becomes a journey.
A song may start in the feet, grounding with tribal percussion. Another might spiral through the hips, teasing movement from deep within the pelvis. Then comes a melody that unfurls the heart, followed by a frequency that stirs the throat open—and suddenly, someone who hasn’t spoken their truth in years lets out a deep, unexpected sound. A cry. A call. A “Yes!”
Over the years, we’ve come to trust the unseen intelligence that guides this process. We’ve been led to obscure composers and anonymous instrumentals that move energy more powerfully than any mainstream hit ever could. And we’ve collaborated with artists who understood that we weren’t just making music—we were creating sonic architecture.
To those artists—the ones who dared to create from the soul rather than to the charts and understood that transformation—we bow. To the students and teachers who tested each song with their breath, their bones, their sweat, their stillness—we are in deep gratitude. You helped shape the most unique sound field in the world, which we now call, NiaSounds.
