Sensing Our Energy Within, from Debbie Rosas.
I’ve spent my life dancing with sensation—curious about why we’re drawn to things, how we move toward what calls us, and what guides us to say “yes” or “no.” That magnetic feeling? That moment of desire, hesitation, or knowing? I call it the pull.
It is human nature to feel pulled—toward people, places, pleasures, ideas. That pull lives in the body first. It shows up as sensation—heat, shiver, weight, openness, resistance. It travels through the nervous system, stirs emotions, and feeds the mind.
Sometimes it touches something far deeper—our spirit. But how we respond to the pull is what shapes our lives and we aren’t often taught how to sense the pull with awareness. And, we can stumble into it, reacting from fear, conditioning, or confusion.
I wasn’t given tools for how to listen to the voice of my body. As a little girl in the 1950’s, when I reached for something I wanted—a donut, a delight—my hand got slapped. I learned to ignore my body’s voice. I started to settle. I disconnected from desire.
But over time—through dance, discipline, and much devotion—I came home to my body. I discovered that the pull isn’t something to suppress or fear. It’s a sacred signal. It’s even a moment of communication between my body and my life.
So, I created a practice to help myself pause and listen before reacting. I call it the “30-Second Body First Game.” It’s simple. Before making a decision, I take 30 seconds. I tune into the pull in my body. I locate it—from my gut, or heart, or hips.
I let that area have its voice. Then, I listen to what my mind says. Only after that, I respond—with greater clarity, integrity, and alignment. This practice changed my life one day as I felt the pull. I was picking up takeout when someone caught my eye.
They were attractive. My second chakra lit up: Yes! Instead of acting on impulse, I smiled, stood in the moment, and honored the sensation. My body got to speak first, then my mind: Debbie, you’re married. Enjoy the chemistry—and go home.
I did. And it felt beautiful, clean, and aligned. This is how I’ve learned to trust myself. To feel more empowered, more sovereign, more alive. And, you can too. To guide this inner listening, I use the language of the chakras, which have a voice.
Chakra wisdom is a kind of energy intelligence with a message that we can access. These seven energy centers aren’t abstract—they’re sensory energy portals. Each holds clues to what we’re feeling, what we’re needing, and what’s pulling us.
To practice this method, I recommend this:
- Start a Pull Journal: Each day, notice something you’re pulled toward. Where did you feel it? Which chakra spoke? What did your body say? What did your mind say? What choice did you make?
- Practice Standing Tall: Imagine a white cord of light running through you—rooted in the Earth, reaching toward the sky. Along this central line are your seven chakras. Now sense their energy.
- Tune In: Place your hands on one chakra at a time and ask a question. Listen. Let the energy swirl and speak. Don’t rush it. Chakras speak in sensation, not in sentences. Let yourself notice sensation.
- Notice Your Body’s Way:
- Does your body feel heavy or light?
- Is your voice high and tense—or deep and grounded?
- Do you feel safe in your skin, or are you bracing?
These are real messages. The more we attune to the pull, the more we’ll see it’s not random. It’s a conversation. And when we know how to listen, we become the director of our own choices. My 30-Second Body First Game is an offering to us all.
It is a way to pause, sense, interpret, and act from our truth. Try it the next time you’re about to make a spontaneous purchase. Ask: Is this coming from joy? From loneliness? From curiosity? Maybe it’s your Heart Chakra speaking.
When we understand where the pull is coming from, we can meet it with compassion—and choose with intention. May we always honor the voice of our body and may we discover that the wisdom we seek has been living in us all along.
