Create Choreography With The Nia Technique!
A Live Immersion Study, With Debbie Rosas.
Are you ready to craft movement that speaks your truth, expresses your essence, and awakens your “Sensation Science?” In this six session Online experience, you’ll step into your role as a choreographer.
Through The Nia Technique, you will learn not only how to format and design one hour movement experiences for your students, but how to teach students to personalize that movement for themselves.
Using the four realms of Whole Being that include the body, mind, emotion, and spirit for your palette, you’ll learn to stylize choreography that is emotionally resonant, musically alive, and somatically coherent.
Together, we will explore the art of sensing emotion through movement, honoring personal expression, and creating transformational choreography. This is more than choreography—it’s The Body’s Way made visible.

Until I see you then, here is a guided process based on The Nia Technique that you can use to create choreography rooted in emotion and personalized sensation for a movement study that tells your “Sensory Story.”
PART 1: Free + Flow
Focus on sensing and feeling movement through your body, mind, emotions and spirit, before shaping it externally.
- Freeze. Freeze the start and stop points of a movement and notice it as the form, the bones, and the joints on which sensation and emotion are added.
- Flow. Recall a personal story and awaken a memory to activate emotion. Listen to the music and choose an additional complimentary emotion.
- Lie down and close your eyes and see the choreography from start to finish while sensing and feeling the memory.
PART 2: Sketch Drawing Movement + Feeling
Focus on sensing and feeling movement through your hands and your eyes and drawing it before shaping it externally.
- With a crayon or pencil, sketch and draw your choreography movements from start to finish.
- Let your hand translate sensation and emotion into lines, curves, pressure, and flow. This is Your Body’s Way movement memory map.
PART 3: Choreographing from Sensation
Focus on sensing the movement through your body then shaping it externally.
- Use your drawing as somatic inspiration to help you add more movement, emotion, and musical expression, while checking to make sure you’re not over doing or under doing any one or more of these.
- Based on movement shape, weight distribution, polarity tension, and transitions; improvise and personalize and in the moment, express the choreography.
- Define the emotional arc of your story. Ask: Where is the musical and emotional peak? Where are the transitions? Where and what rhythm, melody and tempo live in the choreography? What do my body, mind, emotions, and spirit want to say?
PART 4: Assessing Sensory Coherence
When reflecting and/or receiving feedback, ask:
- Is the music’s energy felt in the movement—without needing to be performed?
- Is the emotional energy felt in the movement—without needing to pretend?
- Do the transitions flow naturally or are they abrupt or confusing?
- Does the movement align with the Whole Being. Does it express through body, mind, emotion, and spirit?
- Does the choreography personalize the experience, meaning: does it feel like yours?
As you develop choreography with The Nia Technique, you will find your unique way of weaving both abstraction and expression, as well as design and depth. You’ll learn when to lead with the body and when to follow the music.
You’ll sense when to move from stillness and when to let your spirit shine. Choreography through The Nia Technique requires presence. We create with intention. We let emotion be a felt personal movement signature, not a pretend role.
Above all, we honor our unique and individual spirit, soul, and body with the Sensation Science of personal awareness as our most important guide.
This is The Body’s Way. This is The Nia Technique.
