Our Awareness

Growing Healthy, Happy Human Beings,

With Debbie Rosas.

Awareness of living life in the body is not a mystical experience. Awareness is a practical experience. It is The Body’s Way and it is our birthright.  We are born instinctually aware. Born curious and born with the skills to listen to our body and track its messaging signals of both pain and pleasure. Flirting with every moment, our body asks us to pay attention and to use what we notice and sense as a gateway to develop a joyful, pleasurable, healthy, meaningful, and functional body and life.

Even though our minds, emotions, and spirits may not be aware all of the time, our bodies are so. Whether we’re asleep or awake, our body is always aware and paying attention; noticing, tracking, detecting, and searching for what’s out of sorts with the intention of every human being, which is survival.

I did not consciously plan to become a researcher, an educator, a lecturer, nor an academic in the pursuit of studies in kinesiology, anatomy, and physiology; or even an instructor of fitness, health, and well being.  I did not intend to venture into the business of the body through teaching people how to enter into a loving and respectful relationship with their bodies. But, however unknown to me, my body knew it had a plan. I believe this plan started the moment I was born into a body with illnesses.

These illnesses attacked my senses and challenged me with learning disabilities.  If it had not been for discovering my body’s innate curiosity and fascination to know what was happening to me not by thinking, but by sensing; I might never have discovered my body’s way of “paying attention” and learning.

What started out for me as sensory signals of pain and pleasure grew into a body wisdom awareness practice that guided me into trusting the voice of my body — sensation. Once I consciously flipped my awareness button back on, I started regaining the sensory knowledge living within me. Moment to moment I started saying “No” to even the subtlest of discomforts and “Yes” to more and more pleasure, through tracking subtle, moderate, and “I’ve had enough” pain signals.

I discovered there are many ways to measure what feels good and what is good for us and for our bodies. Each way relies on something I have termed as body and mind “Logic and Mystery Wisdom,” and each requires time for research, exploration, and self reflection to reveal personal body wisdom insights.

Grounded in awareness, everything in my life became personalized and individualized. The concept of “body centered,” as an approach to health and well being through awareness became foundational to all my future work in developing and writing The Body’s Way, with the guidance I could trust to take me into learning and knowing my body, mind, emotion, and spirit for development and for healing. This became the very best way to measure sensations of health in my body.

All experience arises out of awareness and all awareness arises out of experience. I believe the body is a gift and that the body in awareness is meant to provide each of us with personal insights and knowledge to help us create and manifest the body and life we desire to help us grow into whole, healthy, happy human beings.
