Awakening Your Body’s Rhythm Through Jazz, With Debbie Rosas.
Movement has always been my playground; a space where I explore, express, and come alive. Each movement form carries its own signature that is a way of communicating energy, emotion, and sensation. Jazz, more than any other, has taught me the joy of expression—of moving with flair, attitude, and playful spontaneity.
The first time I truly embodied Jazz, I felt my body pulse with rhythm with every movement an exclamation and a burst of energy directed outward. Jazz invites me to take up space, to perform, to move like I’m in the center stage, even when no one is watching. It’s about boldness, confidence, and letting go of inhibition.
I remember the exact moment I let Jazz take over—I wasn’t just moving, I was performing. My hands became alive, my hips popped, my shoulders pulsed to the beat. It wasn’t just dance, it was storytelling. That’s when I knew that Jazz is more than movement, it’s a state of mind. I invite you to step into this experience of rhythm, through Jazz.
Jazz is dynamic and expressive with surprise, attitude, and pure joy. By embracing its essence, you awaken a new level of self-expression. It embodies:
• Rhythm and playfulness – Every movement is a musical note, a playful gesture.
• Spontaneity and surprise – Unpredictability keeps Jazz alive.
• Boldness and attitude – Movement with confidence, presence, and pizzazz.
• Sensuality and charisma – A performance that radiates from within.
Each time you step onto a movement space with music—whether in a Nia class, at home in your kitchen, or as you attend a celebration—you have the opportunity to embody the energy of Jazz. Let yourself move with flair, with soul, with a playful spark that turns each motion into an expression of your whole fabulous being.
• Move and express yourself with pizzazz—let your body become a vibrant storyteller.
• Be aware of isolated body parts—let your hips, shoulders, and fingers speak.
• Use your face and hands to communicate—every expression is part of the dance.
• Play with small gestures that speak—let passion show through the tiniest movements.
Jazz is more than dance—its presence is an energy and an attitude. To deepen your practice, use visualization to embody the energy of Jazz:
• Expressive Mask – Imagine your face as a mask, electrifying the space with emotion.
• Popcorn Motion – See yourself as popcorn, bursting from every part of your body.
• Fiery Beams – Project red-hot beams of energy from your expressive hands and arms.
• Orange Glow – Imagine the color orange flowing into any body part you want to ignite.
• Shake It Off – Vibrate and shake like a dog shaking off water, releasing excess energy.
• The Entertainer – Become the confident performer you imagine yourself to be.
• Spotlight Moment – Visualize all lights on you, capturing the audience’s gaze.
I invite you to step daily into the rhythm of Jazz. The next time you move your body—whether in a class, a performance, or simply walking down the street—let yourself add a little flair. Feel the rhythm in your shoulders, the beat in your steps, the playfulness in your hands. Let your movement be a celebration of expression, a statement of confidence, a burst of joy.
