About Pain + Pleasure, With Debbie Rosas.
When our bodies make their first movements at ground level, they are eventually guided to stand up. We do this without the hired assistant of a personal trainer and without “thinking” about body alignment. We stand up as we are driven by what we see and what we sense. Along the way of learning to stand up and balance on our two feet, any adjustments to the posture of our bodies is driven by an awareness of pain and pleasure signals. Even the slightest discomfort is a signal from our body to do something to feel better.
As babies, we achieve the skill to stand at about 10 to 15 months. Our body’s built-in conscious personal trainer instinctively moves us without our needing to “think” about it. The body instinctively knows how to coordinate the complexity of its muscular, skeletal, and vestibular systems. Along the way of living in our bodies, what began as intuitive can become something more mechanical. As we grow, we may often think through our body movement in a way that we believe can better protect ourselves from pain and injury.
But, to the body, conscious thinking is a slower and a less effective way to take care of itself. Returning to our body’s pre-verbal intelligence comes from mindful attention to the sensation of our body’s Systemic Measure of pain and pleasure, and then responding to even the slightest amount of discomfort by adapting what we are doing in our bodies, through changes in movement with our bodies for our body alignment.
X-Ray Anatomy
There is nothing more important to feeling vitality through movement, than body alignment. In Nia, Art of Sensation education, the X-Ray Anatomy technique utilizes The Body’s Way design and function to teach mindful Observation of the sensation of your body’s Systemic Measure of pain and pleasure for changing and improving every day living into more and more moments of feeling vitality and moving not just well, but better. It teaches you to sense, see, and observe Vertical, Horizontal, and Rotational body alignment and to sketch your body alignment in your mind through writing assignments using another technique in Nia, Art of Sensation education called, “Zorro.”
Why is proper body alignment so important? Proper body alignment puts less stress on your bones, joints, tissues, and organs. When your bones, joints, tissues and organs are properly aligned, then you can sit and stand comfortably. You can move vertically, horizontally, and in circles, spirals, as well as a wide variety of ranges of motion and speeds. Additionally, proper body alignment can help you stay active and even help limit the amount of “kyphosis,” which is a forward curve of the upper back.
Learning to sustain functional and dynamic body alignment in movement and in stillness gives you the knowledge and skills you need to self heal and condition your body. It begins by simply learning to arrange and shape your body in ways that effectively and efficiently engage your body’s bones and joints, ligaments, tendons, soft tissues, and muscles.
Body shaping utilizes yet another Nia, Art of Sensation education technique called 200 + 700. This refers to the 200 plus bones and 700 plus muscles in the body. Exploring 200 + 700 reveals an endless world of movement for your body with a variety possibilities. It also provides a larger lens through which to see and cultivate self healing and conditioning benefits.
Sensation Science
As a Sensation Science methodology, X-Ray Anatomy begins with witnessing what is happening beneath your skin; sensing bone and joint alignment, together with ligament and muscle messages of comfort and discomfort, and of effort and ease. This skill is developed through Interoceptor Awareness, which is the ability to identify, access, understand, and respond appropriately to internal body signals.
Interoceptor Awareness provides a distinct advantage to help you engage in body and life challenges and make ongoing necessary adjustments to stay physically healthy and well. While using sensory awareness for Systemic Measure in your body, you can functionally move and observe “on aligned,” or healthy and “off aligned,” or unhealthy Vertical, Horizontal, and Rotational bone and joint body alignment, as you sense squeeze (tighten) and release (loosen) ligament and muscle sensations to make good choices.
