About Breasts, With Debbie Rosas.

At the heart of it, breasts are enchanting. There is no denying it for both males and females and everyone in between; breasts are fascinating, alluring, seductive, nurturing and above all, miraculously functional. Our attraction to breasts is wired into our human biology. Breasts are part of both nature and nurture, so without them, early human beings could not have survived.

When gently placed between the breasts of a mother’s body, a newborn will instinctually find their way to her breast to suckle. It is as if infants have a homing sense toward life. I know that science can explain that magic, which is called breast crawling, but I prefer to stick with the mystery, the unspoken joy, and the sense of the sacred that bubbles up in my heart.

Generations of us were denied our most basic need to be nourished at the breasts of our mothers; the most sacred of rituals in human development.

When I see a baby suckle a breast, I am triggered to do my adult suckling by breathing in much more deeply to fill my lungs with the nourishment of oxygen. I walk away reflecting on when I might have had a breast to suck on. The sight reminds me to connect, so I might go eat, drink, paint, write, dance, or call a loved one to find nourishment I need and crave.

I was not breastfed. Science suggests that my loss of this experience as an infant has left a deep hole of longing in me. And, I regret not breastfeeding my own children, as I was unable to do so at the time. I had fibroid breast tumors which I discovered during my pregnancy and I had to have my breasts surgically removed immediately following my daughter’s birth.

So, when I see a mother breastfeeding her child, it reminds me to connect, to reach out, and to find the nature and nourishment that I need and crave.

I remember wondering if I had somehow developed these tumors to fulfill some need. During the 1970s, breastfeeding was still regarded by many as “not done.” It was the end of an era when American culture and society discouraged breastfeeding from about 1860 to 1960. In evolution, this might be minor, if it were not for the deep impact it had on our humanity.

Generations of us were denied our most basic need to be nourished at the breasts of our mothers.  The question still remains as to what fundamental changes have occurred due to nearly 100 years when human beings in the US were denied the security, warmth, nutrition and the opportunity to experience one of the most sacred rituals in human development.

We can seek out and explore educational opportunities that will support and fulfill our need for our self care and our self nourishment.

So, when I see a mother breastfeeding her child, it reminds me to connect, to reach out, and to find the nourishment that I need and crave. We might all learn to do so and we can. We all need healthy nourishment and human connection; these are our most basic instincts and needs. So, how do we nourish ourselves? Our understanding is the key to our change.

We can sense if we are under-nourished or under-loved, and that we can never do too much to fill those holes created as a result of this one change in our natural evolution. What if every human being knew the importance of this need to nourish themselves? The root of this dysfunction is the denial of a need. Self care and self nourishment are essential to our lives.

Everyone can begin at this very moment, by listening to their body. It is an essential part of our nature and nurture that we must revisit. We can also seek out and explore educational opportunities that will support and fulfill our need to create time and space for our self care and self nourishment.
