Sound + Silence

Music is a universal language that all people speak. Logic and mystery through music can be felt and sensed in all parts of the body. Virtually instantaneous, next to the sense of smell, music is the fastest way to reset the mind, without the use of drugs. Something we can hear and sense; sound as an invisible force vibrates every cell in the body.  And, the sound of music embeds its Rhythm, Melody, and Harmony into the very first cells that form the human body.

At the same time, I felt deeply connected to the sensation of something I refer to as Whole Body Listening, and together with it, the earth and the infinite cosmos.

Listening to the lush sound of the mother’s heartbeat; this primal low frequency soundtrack of whooshing flows and pulsates through the human body from the placenta and umbilical cord to create a symphony where two heartbeats become one. Throughout life, music becomes tangible to the body and is often considered to be one of the oldest forms of healing used by the Greek, Chinese, Indian, Tibetan, Egyptian, Native American, Mayan, Inca, and Aztec people.

I remember the day I became one with music. I felt something a yogi would call, “Satcitananda” — absolute bliss. I had fallen into the sensation of “oneness,” and into what John M. Ortiz, in his book, The Tao of Music, describes as, “the sound of the lost chord.”  I was listening and dancing differently, aware that some part of me, other than my ears, was hearing and creating a different response in my body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

The more I consciously listened without thinking, the more I unconsciously responded to sound, while the more my body, mind, emotions, and spirit freely expressed themselves without restraint.  At the same time, I felt deeply connected to the sensation of something I refer to as Whole Body Listening, and together with it, the earth and the infinite cosmos. In that moment I was swept up by a magical carpet ride into the universal world of sound and silence.

Sensing my body and perceiving my body with fifty trillion cellular ears; I have learned the medicinal value for health and wellness benefits from musical sound variety.

I soon discovered a new adventure in sound that included more than 1.5 billion songs and upwards of 5,000 music genres, each with their own individual and unique sound signatures and with a mystery of sound healing from diverse cultures that offered different Rhythm, Melody, and Harmony. With more sound choices and through the application of Whole Body Listening in Nia, the promise of personalized health and wellness became available for all.

Expanding sound and silence choice put a new face and feel to Nia health and wellness that changed the relationship of every body to music and movement with Whole Body Listening for holistic physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and wellness. Nurturing a healthy brain and a responsive and adaptable nervous system soon became available for everyone. In addition, I have come to marvel and value the extraordinary power of the human ear and sensation.

Ultimately, in the Nia experience, music is the universal language that teaches us to find some of the most intimate parts of ourselves through Whole Body Listening.

Sensing my body and perceiving my body with fifty trillion cellular ears, I have learned the medicinal value for health and wellness benefits from sound and silence variety. Ears are the only sense organ capable of transmitting numerous musical tempos and beats to the brain, while recognizing and transmitting numerous proportions of musical intervals, such as an octave, or a fifth, and at the same time, numerous individual musical note values, such as C, G, or F.

I have come to know listening as a practice and music as a kinesthetic impact sensation that causes me to instinctively respond, guided by natural impulses. And, by what the late 19th century inventor of a radio receiving device, Alexander Popov, expressed as a, “biological symphony – a sensorial interface between the human body and the fundamental forces of physics; a wilderness of shimmering synapses converting current into the song of feeling.”

From a neuroscience perspective, music is a language with structure. From a physiological perspective, music can both calm or agitate the body. It can also stimulate dopamine, activating the pleasure and reward pathway in the body and make it feel good. It can raise or lower pulse and blood pressure or stimulate activity in our entire body and brain. I believe music is like chi. It is an invisible force that breathes life into our bodies and into our lives.

Ultimately, in the Nia experience, music is the universal language that teaches us to find some of the most intimate parts of ourselves through Whole Body Listening of sound and silence.
