Meet Britta!

Greetings!

My name is Britta von Tagen.

My early Nia beginnings were in the traditional teachings of elementary education. Over the years, in this environment and in other environments, I have become quite fascinated with how people learn and take on new information. Not only can learning happen in the classroom, but anywhere and at any time, if one is focused and open. I think my attention to others and my awareness of their learning style stems from my own sensitivity. As a young person, I always deemed myself as having special powers to feel things both from myself and from others. This sensitivity helped me to be gentle and empathic but at the same time, overly dramatic. Ahhh, life is a great balance! So I go on learning…

Once learned, I love witnessing when a flow is created and a student gets excited about a new skill or a new move they can take on independently!

Nia came to me in my early twenties and it has been the greatest conduit for all else, especially for living a full and adventurous life. I feel the best when I am in Nia, in Community and in Nature. I connect to the essence of all elements through my body sensations and my personal expressions. And, especially the nuances in the music that help me ground, sense, and connect to a deeper awareness of self and a broader perspective. I can’t believe I have been practicing and teaching Nia for almost 30 years! Whenever my attention draws me away from Nia, there is an energy and a vibrancy that pulls me back. Through Nia, it holds me and supports me. I really have no idea what life would be like without my Nia lifestyle.

Nia invites you to invest in your body, listen to sensation, and choose joy. I’m also inviting you to use Nia to invest in the place we call home. Earth.

For Earth Day this year and throughout every day and every year, I envision many dancers encircling the globe with a common goal of preservation and responsibility for the choices and actions we make in relation to our Earth. When I dance Nia, I feel the energy and chemistry of a grand collective power that can wield positivity and light. This power can be manifested into healing for our bodies and for our Earth. I can’t do it alone and I am hoping many people in Nia communities will step into this awareness of responsibility and proactivity. It would be great if we could find a daily reminder and thankfulness that we are here to help each other and our earth. Let’s keep her and us safe from abuse, destruction and an overuse of resources.

My passion is for Earth Day awareness in all my Nia classes and Nia Education courses to spill over into our bodies and lives. May JOY be our guide!
